About the Podcast
As a medical student exploring ophthalmology, I was intrigued by the intersection of eye care and sports. However, a lack of educational resources became evident. With the help of Dr. Gary Legault, I started Sports Ophthalmology. Our mission is to spread awareness about this exciting subfield and build a supportive network for future trainees like myself.

What is Sports Ophthalmology?

Athlete Screening
Injury Care and Prevention
Performance Vision
Athletes are found across diverse populations and levels of competition. While resources and involvement may vary, here are some ways that ophthalmologists can actively participate as members of the sports medicine team:
A comprehensive eye exam can catch common eye diseases that often impair performance both on and off the field, improving access to care. Screening events usually occur at the beginning of sports seasons, including community sports physicals, draft or combine events, or pre-trade evaluations.
As experts in the visual system and patient care, ophthalmologists are uniquely positioned to develop evidence-based interventions and tailor treatments to help athletes achieve their peak performance. Relevant fields include industry, neurology, and optometry.
Sports-related ocular trauma can be devastating. Ophthalmologists lead teams to triage and treat these conditions, providing specialty care when necessary.
By advocating for eye protection, rule changes, and safe rule enforcement, ophthalmologists can help prevent eye injuries.
