About the Sports Ophthalmology Society

The Sports Ophthalmology Society is an initiative dedicated to advancing eye care, safety, and vision performance for athletes across all levels of competition. Our mission is to unite ophthalmologists who contribute to the visual health and performance of athletes nationwide.

We are compiling the first comprehensive roster of ophthalmologists currently providing care across major professional sports leagues, including the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and other professional leagues.

In collaboration with national leaders, we are creating resources for early career sports ophthalmologists -- providing career guidance and educational opportunities.

We are gaining support from a robust network of sports ophthalmologists. Members help shape best-practice guidelines, advocacy priorities, research directions, and mentorship opportunities.

Our History

The Sports Ophthalmology Society of the Americas (SOSA) was founded in 2006 by Dr. Rolando Toyos to "advance the art and science of sports ophthalmology" and vision care for athletes.

From 2006 to 2009, SOSA helped introduce the field of sports ophthalmology to the broader ophthalmic community. The group organized educational courses at major meetings (ASCRS), created clinical care guidelines for athletes, collaborated with industry on emerging research in sports vision, and contributed expertise in the care of high-profile athletes.

The organization was ultimately dissolved in 2009, in part due to limited ability at the time to foster a broad network within this niche field.

In 2026, the organization was revived as the Sports Ophthalmology Society. With expanding interest and improved connectivity, SOS is poised to continue advancing the mission of improving eye care for athletes.
